GRADUATE COUNCIL MINUTES

December 9, 2008

 

The Graduate Council met Tuesday, December 9, 2008, in the Rayburn
Student Center Pride Conference Room (#231) at 3:00 p.m. with Dean Allan
D. Headley presiding.  Members present were:  Dr. Ken Alford, Dr. Harry
Fullwood, Dr. John Hanners, Dr. John Humphreys, Dr. Ben Jang, Dr. Jeff
Kopachena, Dr. Sharon Kowalsky, Ms. Jonne Atkins for Ms. LeAnn Nash, Dr.
Linda Openshaw, Dr. Chester Robinson, Dr. Derek Royal, Ms. Stacey
Stancik, Dr. Jon Travis, Dr. Janet Walker, and Dr. Dayle Yeager.  Dr.
Steven Shwiff was absent.  Dr. Mary Beth Sampson, Interim Vice Chair,
was also in attendance.  

 

Action Items

The minutes from the last Graduate Council, November 11, 2008, were
approved.  

 

Committee on Curriculum

Dr. Hanners presented a committee report to make changes to Procedure
11.04.99.R0.21 Master's Degree Research Component.  The changes
clarified Option I and Option II for master's degree seeking students.
There was a lengthy discussion on the thesis and if it should be a
significant contribution to the field of study.  The Council unanimously
approved the committee report with changes.

 

Committee on Graduate Faculty, Research & Instruction 

Dr. Royal presented a committee recommendation for changes to the senior
graduate faculty status six-year review form.  The changes emphasize the
importance of completing the form and provide evidence of research
activity during the previous 6 years.  The Council unanimously approved
the changes with amendments that will be used in the reviews for Spring
2009.

 

Dr. Royal presented a committee report recommending that Dr. Robin Reid
(Literature and Languages) be approved for senior faculty membership
through 2014.  The Graduate Council approved the recommendation.
