Dear Faculty,
Texas A&M-Commerce is making every effort to support and help every student maintain satisfactory academic progress. Last year we implemented an Early Intervention program for all first-time, full-time freshman during the fourth week of the semester. This effort uses faculty input to assist struggling students.
Thanks in part to the implementation of Early Intervention last Fall our retention rate for first-time, full time freshmen rose from 58.51% for the Fall 2006 cohort to 65.04% for the Fall 2007 cohort. With all our combined efforts, we could see a much higher percentage for the Fall 2008 cohort.
While we understand that is early in the semester and that tests and assignments may not have been turned in yet, we are asking for your input not only on available grades, but on other academic indicators such as attendance that will alert us to a persistent problem.
You can assist us greatly in our effort by logging in to MyLEO and completing the electronic Early Intervention forms for all your classes as quickly as possible. This will allow the Early Intervention support team to begin working with the indicated students and providing them with the support needed to get on track and complete the semester successfully.
This Fall we have also included a check box for "needs referral". This box is to be used for students in whom you have observed non-academic behaviors (e.g. coming to class without supplies, sleeping in class, suspected alcohol use, etc.) indicative of a concern. These students will be referred to the Counseling Center for follow up and intervention as warranted.
To access, please log into MyLEO and on the left hand side click on the tab for Early Intervention (see screen shot below for reference). You will only be asked to report information for the first-time, full-time freshman in your classes at this time.
Again, we thank you for your assistance with this important effort! If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Best wishes,
Wendy
