CONSTITUTION DAY TO BE MARKED AT A&M-C ON SEPT. 17

COMMERCE, Texas - Constitution Day will be marked Wednesday, Sept.
17, on the Texas A&M University-Commerce campus.

This American observance that recognizes the ratification of the
United States Constitution will feature a panel discussion from 9 to
9:50 a.m. in the Founders Lounge of the Sam Rayburn Student Center and a
film in the evening.

"Celebrating Constitution Day is significant because remembering
our historical past as a nation serves to remind us of our basic
political values," said Dr. JoAnn DiGeorgio-Lutz, A&M-Commerce
Department of Political Science head who will moderate the panel. "We
pause to reflect in order to remember what was, and still is, important
as a country," she said.

Speaking on the panel will be Dr. John Smith of the Department of
History and April C. Pitts, J.D., Dr. Chad Smith, and Dr. Jeff Herndon,
all of the political science faculty.

Smith will speak on the "Religious Beliefs of the Framers of the
Constitution: Deism and the Separation of Powers" and Pitts'

topic will be "Judicial Activism."

King's topic will be "The U.S. Constitution, the U.S. Supreme
Court, and the Death Penalty." Herndon will speak on "Reason,
Representation, and Reality in 'The Federalist.'"

Also at that event, students and local citizens can join the
"Founding Fathers" and put their own signatures to the Constitution.

At 6:30 p.m., a Constitution Day film and discussion will take
place in the A&M-Commerce Planetarium. "Twelve Angry Men"

starring Henry Fonda will be presented.

A Constitution Day observance is required by the U.S.

Department of Education for schools receiving federal funds.

The public is invited to the observance.
