From: R. N. Singh for Faculty Senate, A&M-Commerce

Dated: September 3, 2008

Subject: Plans for 2008-09

Our faculty senate had its first meeting yesterday. President Jones,
Provost Hendrix, and Vice President Brown were our guest speakers. They
addressed issues such as the budgeting process for the coming year, our
requests or priorities for the Texas Legislature for special funding for
the coming year (for items such as $1,314,840 for a B. S. degree program
in Construction Engineering; $1,050,000 for the Rayburn College aimed at
recruiting and retaining transfer students; $2,813,000 for the College
Readiness Academy ; and tuition revenue bond projects for a major
renovation of the Gee Library ($23,250,000), the renovation of Remote
Existing E&G Buildings (Ferguson Social Sciences Bldg. and the Hall of
Languages) ($11,250,000). Details on all budget requests will be
forthcoming.

President Jones will seek faculty input at every stage of the budgetary
process. He is appointing a Budget Advisory Committee that will include
three members selected by our faculty senate. The senate elected the
following faculty members for the advisory committee representing each
of our colleges: Dr. La Velle Hendricks (COEHS), Dr. Randy Odom (CBT),
and Dr. Philippe Seminet (CAS). Dr. Tim Wilson will serve as an
alternate member in the event any member is unable to attend a meeting.
Dr. Odom, who is chairing the Budget Committee of faculty senate, will
coordinate reports on the advisory committee's activities to the senate.
The senate will seek input from everyone concerned and post on the
senate's website details on the budget as they become available through
Dr. Odom.

Nine committees of the faculty senate have been appointed. Listings of
all committees as well as names of senators for 2008-09 will be
available on our website by early next week. Dr. John Smith, Department
of History, has been elected as the President-Elect of Faculty Senate
for this academic year. Please log into our website (under Faculty and
Staff on the university's home page) to learn about the minutes of our
meetings and agendas of the forthcoming meetings as well. We hope you
get involved in our activities. We plan to discuss important issues such
as revisions in our tenure procedure, strategies for recruitment and
retention of students, changes in our class schedules on campus, plans
for our off-campus offerings, and so forth. Please e-mail me (
Raghu_Singh at tamu-commerce.com <mailto:Raghu_Singh at tamu-commerce.com> )
for your input on any items you want us to address in the best interest
of our university and students.
