Good morning:
Section 51.907 of the Texas Education Code states that, beginning in the
Fall 2008 semester, undergraduate students who began full-time college
enrollment at a Texas public institution for the first time in the Fall
2007 semester or later will be limited to a total of six (6) dropped
courses for academic reasons during undergraduate studies. This drop
limit total is based on the number of courses dropped regardless of
credit hour value.
Students may drop a course during the first 12 class days in a fall or
spring semester (and during the first four class days in a summer
session) without impacting the drop limit. However, if students are on
financial aid, they should always check with financial aid to determine
the impact of dropping any courses. Withdrawals do not count toward the
drop limit.
Courses dropped after the 12th class day in a fall or spring semester
(and after the 4th class day in summer terms) will impact the drop
limit.
If a student cannot drop a course because he/she has reached the
six-drop limit, the student will receive the grade earned in the course.
If a student reaches the six-drop limit and appeals for a non-academic
drop, the student will receive a Q for the drop if the appeal is
approved; however, the student will receive the grade earned in the
course if the appeal is denied.
With the implementation of the Six-Drop Rule, it is necessary to change
the way drop grades are assigned; therefore, a grade of Q will now be
the assigned grade for all drops rather than a DP or DF. Q grades will
count toward attempted hours; however, they will not count toward earned
hours or a student's grade point average. The Q grade will be
automatically assigned when a requested drop has been approved and
processed for all students including graduate students.
Graduate students are not subject to the six-drop rule but will have the
advantage of the Q grade.
In addition to the new drop grade, the last date to drop a course has
now been moved to Friday of the ninth week of classes. For spring, the
last day to drop will be March 27, 2009. This does not apply to
withdrawals (the last day to withdrawal is two weeks prior to the end of
the semester). The withdrawal deadline will remain May 1, 2009.
