Good morning:

As you know, we will soon be entering a base period. Several of you have
sent questions regarding flex-entry courses. We thought a detailed
explanation might be helpful:

Flex-entry is defined by the Coordinating Board as "any class organized
after the official census date will be included in the data submitted in the
semester following; i.e., (a) classes organized after the 12th class day of
the fall semester will be reported in the following spring semester 12th
class day report; (b) classes organized after the 12th class day of the
spring semester will be reported in the first summer session following, etc.
(A class is "organized" when students have registered and paid fees or
established an accounts receivable)."

There are some courses, particularly upper-division and master's and
doctoral-level courses, that lend themselves to beginning after the Spring
census date. The decision to offer flex-entry courses should be based on
sound academic reasons and/or to meet the need for access for our students
without sacrificing quality. The Coordinating Board does not establish a
percentage for the number of courses that should or can begin after the
census date.

Please keep in mind the 45-clock-hours requirement if delivering a
face-to-face class. If courses are to be delivered using a combination of
face-to-face and online delivery modes, the clock-hour requirement does not
apply. Examples of starting and ending flex-entry dates using the 45-hour
requirement for face-to-face courses include:

 8 wk session - 03/10/08 to 05/09/08, census 03/24/08

10 wk session - 02/25/08 to 05/09/08, census 03/04/08

13 wk session - 02/04/08 to 05/09/08, census 02/15/08

14 wk session - 01/31/08 to 05/09/08, census 02/13/08

If you have any questions regarding flex-entry courses, please contact Paige
Bussell, Registrar.
