GRADUATE COUNCIL MINUTES

October 9, 2007

 

The Graduate Council met Tuesday, October 9, 2007, in the MSC Boardroom at
3:00 p.m. with Dean Allan D. Headley presiding.  Members present were:  Dr.
Ken Alford, Dr. Harry Fullwood, Dr. John Hanners, Dr. Ben Jang, Ms. Elaine
Lin, Mr. Gideon Mazambani, Dr. Linda Openshaw, Dr. Derek Royal, and Dr. Mary
Beth Sampson.  Members absent were:  Dr. Hasan Coskun, Dr. Jeff Kopachena,
Dr. Chris Myers, Dr. Chester Robinson, Dr. Steven Shwiff, Dr. Janet Walker,
and Dr. Dayle Yeager.   

 

The minutes from the last Graduate Council, September 11, 2007, were
approved.  

 

Dr. Headley introduced the 2007-08 Committees.  The Agenda Committee will be
comprised of the committee chairs:  Dr. John Hanners, Dr. Derek Royal and
Dr. Mary Beth Sampson.

Dr. Headley presented a list of the 2006-07 Graduate Council accomplishments
and discussed the charges for 2007-08.

 

Committee on Faculty, Research & Instruction 

Dr. Royal presented the committee recommendation on graduate faculty
membership.  The Council unanimously approved the following:

Dr. Headley presented the committee recommendation (prepared by Dr. Jon
Travis) for graduate faculty status for Dr. Derek Royal.  The Council voted
unanimously to approve the committee's recommendation for senior membership.

 

One application for associate membership was not awarded, however, temporary
membership was granted.

 

Discussion Items

Doctoral residency - In response to a request from the Department of
Literature and Languages to change the doctoral residency requirement, the
Council discussed doctoral residencies in general.

          Departmental need for computer programming and software
development assistance. 

Recruitment strategies - discussed new ideas to recruit graduate students.
