Graduate Council Minutes

February 14, 2006

The Graduate Council met Tuesday, February 14, 2006, in the MSC Boardroom at
3:00 p.m. with Dean Allan D. Headley presiding.  Members present were: Mr.
Gagandeep Bhatia, Dr. Wendell Edwards, Dr. Sue Espinoza, Mr. Alan Francis,
Dr. Dick Fulkerson, Dr. John Hanners, Dr. Cynthia Harr, Dr. Jeff Kopachena,
Dr. Chris Myers, Dr. Chester Robinson, Dr. Janet Walker, and Dr. Mary Beth
Sampson.  Members absent were:  Dr. Hasan Coskun, Dr. Ben Jang, Dr. Steven
Shwiff, and Dr. Dayle Yeager.  Dr. Jon Travis, Assistant Dean of Graduate
Studies & Research was also in attendance.  

Dean Headley called the meeting to order. 

Action Items

The minutes from the last Graduate Council, December 13, 2005, were
approved.

Dr. Jeff Kopachena was elected Vice Chair.

Report from Committee on Faculty, Research & Instruction

Dr. Fulkerson presented the committee report on Graduate Faculty Membership
applications for Spring 2006.   Dr. Asli Ogunc was approved for a three-year
associate membership; Dr. Robert Folden was approved for associate
membership.  Other applications were denied and/or returned for
clarification.

Dr. Robinson presented the committee report on the 2006-07 Curriculum

Information Items

Dr. Travis presented additional clarification to changes to the Doctoral
Research Tools for a Ph.D. in English that were approved by the Graduate
Council in December.  After a discussion, a motion to accept an amendment
was made by Dr. Harr and seconded by Dr. Kopachena.  The Graduate Council
voted unanimously to change Procedure 11.46 Doctoral Research Tools, Section
1.b. to read as follows:

The research tools requirement for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in English
is 12 semester hours of college-level classes in one foreign language.

Students with native or near-native competence in a relevant foreign
language may consult with the departmental Director of Graduate Studies
regarding this requirement.
