FACULTY RECOGNITION DAY
MAY 4, 2006
The Faculty Senate and President Keith McFarland are working together to
carry on the tradition of honoring faculty by making May 4, 2006 a day of
recognition for the many contributions of faculty at Texas A&M
University-Commerce. Citing campus pride in the faculty's hard-earned
achievements, the president of the Faculty Senate designated May 4th as
Faculty Recognition Day-a day to reinforce the outstanding scholarship and
service accomplished by faculty members through the year.
"Faculty members, here at Texas A&M Commerce, continually go beyond what is
asked of them and this special day has been set aside in order to recognize
that excellence," said Dr. Sherion H. Jackson. "Faculty Recognition Day was
established last year in order that we communicate our deepest appreciation
for the many achievements of our faculty."
Though some universities only acknowledge outstanding scholarship,
A&M-Commerce also honors outstanding service and teaching. "Because A&M
Commerce promotes strong faculty-student relationships and service to
students, and we foster positive and successful classroom experiences, we
wanted to also recognize those who excel in those areas," noted Dr. Jackson.
Faculty Recognition Day will culminate in the presentation of eight of the
university's most prestigious honors: Regents Professor Service Award,
William L. Mayo Professorship, Paul W. Barrus Distinguished Faculty Award
for Teaching, H.M. Lafferty Distinguished Faculty Award for Scholarship and
Creative Activity, Neill Humfeld Distinguished Faculty Award for Service,
Professional Achievement Awards, Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation Nominee,
and U.S. Professor of the Year Nominee.
The Regents Professor designation is awarded by The Texas A&M University
System to professors who have provided exemplary service not only to the
university but also to the community, state or nation.
The William L. Mayo Professorship is awarded locally to an individual who
epitomizes the goal of founder William Mayo: "Ceaseless Industry, Fearless
Investigation, Unfettered Thought."
Outstanding teaching is recognized through the Paul W. Barrus Faculty Award,
and scholarship and creative activity is recognized through the H.M.
Lafferty Distinguished Faculty Award.
The Neill Humfeld Award goes to an individual who performs an outstanding
service to the university, while Professional Achievement awards recognize
those who have outstanding performance in their professional duties.
Nominees for a state and a national award also will be announced at the
Faculty Recognition Luncheon May 4th.
The A&M-Commerce nominee to the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation, which
honors 10 Texas professors each year for their dedication to the profession
and for their outstanding academic, scientific and scholarly achievement,
will be announced.
Also named at the luncheon will be the nominee for the 2005 U.S. Professor
of the Year. The Professor of the Year program is the only national award
that honors undergraduate teaching and mentoring.
