National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week -- October 18 - 22, 2004
In recognition of National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, the Counseling
Center is conducting several activities to promote alcohol awareness and
encourage responsible decision-making regarding the use of alcohol.
Our goal is to reach students, faculty and staff and make them aware of the
following:
▪ Myths about drinking
▪ Dangers of binge-drinking and alcohol dependence
▪ Current statistics on drinking
▪ Legal issues related to alcohol use and abuse
▪ Alternatives to drinking
Come join us outside (east lawn, MSC) and inside (bookstore foyer, MSC) on
Wednesday and Thursday (October 20-21) between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm and
experience a variety of activities that are engaging, informative, and
interactive:
☺ Take a screening instrument to discern how using (and perhaps abusing)
alcohol may be affecting your decisions and your life.
☺ Make a pledge to either abstain from drinking (for whatever period of
time you choose), or be a responsible drinker (if you choose to drink), or
be a designated driver (for others who choose to drink too much).
☺ Participate in the Alcohol 101 “interactive video assessment” to find
out how using (and perhaps abusing) alcohol may be affecting your decisions
and your life.
☺ Wear a purple ribbon to show your support for alcohol awareness and
responsible use of alcohol and your desire to spread the word (about making
good choices) to others.
☺ Check out how it feels to be “under the influence” of too much alcohol
(being over the legal limit) by using our “Beer Goggles” and attempting to
walk a line. You will be videotaped by the University Police, so you can
see yourself “while under the influence”.
☺ Participate in an anonymous on-line alcohol screening. You can do so by
going onto the university website, clicking on Alcohol Awareness Week (which
will take you to the Counseling Center website) and from there click on
On-Line Screening.
For additional questions or more information about how we can help you or
someone you know with issues of alcohol and/or other drug abuse, contact the
Counseling Center at 903-886-5145 or come by the office in the Student
Services Building, Room 204.
