Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride"!
Hunter S. Thompson

I told my family that I want this statement on the program for my memorial service when I kick the bucket. It totally describes my attitude toward life-live life to the fullest and enjoy every experience with a sense of awe-maybe even a little shock-and-awe.

This statement also describes my work-life for the last 43 years, when I began my foray into higher education as the VA certification official in the Registrar's Office for McMurry University, then College. This job-and all the positions I have held-has been the most aggravating, exhilarating, exhausting, and rewarding job I could ever hope to have, and I have enjoyed almost every minute. However, all good things must come to an end, and I will join my dear friends who have gone on to retirement-land before me and will retire on September 2nd. A big "yippee" is definitely in order.

For those new to TACRAO and just starting your careers, I offer a few words of advice. Get involved in TACRAO. The first person I met at my first TACRAO conference was Marty Grassel with Texas Tech University. She introduced me to Marcilla Collinsworth with the University of North Texas. Wanda Simpson with San Jacinto College sat with me at the dinner. I appreciated so much how they introduced me to others at the conference and visited with me throughout the conference. I have met and become friends with so many wonderfully talented and dedicated individuals through TACRAO. I presented at several TACRAO and SACRAO conferences and was pleasantly shocked when people attended the sessions, and for some sessions, asked for repeat sessions. There are so many different experiences associated with TACRAO that I could name, but you get my drift. The friends you make in TACRAO will be life-long friends. They will also become valuable resources and your experiences through the conferences will greatly contribute to your knowledge and success in your job. So, I repeat-get involved in TACRAO. Get on a committee, give a presentation, and offer your assistance (please notice I said "and," not "or"). Your contributions matter.

Bobby Lothringer and Bobbie Brown, thanks for letting me be part of the Three Bobby/ie/ye's Club.

I truly am very excited to retire as I have been so jealous of those who have retired and left me behind. I will move to Beaumont in October and look forward to hanging with friends and family there. And so, to my many friends in TACRAO, thank you for your acceptance, your advice, and your friendship. I bid you a very fond and appreciative adieu. If you make it to Beaumont, give me a call. We can discuss exciting stuff like what life is like with no meetings, afternoon naps, and sleeping past 4:45 a.m.

Sincere blessings to you all,
