[TACRAO] Listserv TACRAO Digest, Vol 823, Issue 1

Erinn,

At TAMUCT, we only confer at the end of the Fall (December), Spring (May) and Summer (August) semesters. Regardless of when a part of term ends within the major semester. I hope that this helps.

Lester Lugo
University Registrar

Good afternoon,

We're doing some benchmarking to see what other colleges are doing when it comes to conferral dates, especially for Allied Health degrees. Our practice has long been that we award a degree or certificate after the semester has ended, regardless of the when the final course was actually completed. For example, we have a group of students who are completing their degree requirements in July; those students will not have their degree awarded until the Summer term ends on August 12th.

We have recently been questioned about this practice, and thought it would be good to reach out to TACRAO members to find out what other schools are doing. Do you award degrees on dates other than your end-of-term dates? If not, how have you handled push-back from students needing the degree posted sooner for licensure purposes?

Thank you,

We only confer at the end of the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. We consistently get pushback from students who do not want to wait, but we have held to those limited conferral dates.

We confer on the official closing date of the term, three times a year: May, August, and December. We have discussed other conferral dates because we have multiple short sessions within each term so students could complete their last course weeks prior to end-of-term. The problem is that there can be only one conferral date in the academic calendar setup in PeopleSoft therefore, if we were to post a degree prior to the conferral date that's in the setup table, it would print on the transcript with a future date.

If any other PeopleSoft schools out there know of a way to remedy this so we could post when requirements are completed prior to the end-of-term, please share.

Subject: [TACRAO] Listserv Question About Conferral Dates

Thank you,

At Tyler we award three times a year - May, August and December. Students finishing requirements in the May Term or Summer I will have their degree posted in August. We have on occasion written letters when needed confirming that the student has met all requirements but their degree will not be posted until the next graduation period. This seems to help.

Subject: [TACRAO] Listserv Question About Conferral Dates

Thank you,

At SMU we confer degrees 6 times a year. At the end of...
Fall Term
January Term
Spring Term
May Term
Summer Term
August Term

At other times, on request, we will provide an addendum to an official transcript indicating that all degree requirements have been completed as of MMDDYYYY and that the degree will be conferred on MMDDYYYYY.

At TCU, we have three confer degrees in May, August, and December. We will do letters if all requirements have been met.

Subject: [TACRAO] Listserv Question About Conferral Dates

Thank you,

Subject: [TACRAO] Listserv Question About Conferral Dates

Thank you,

At Tyler we award three times a year - May, August and December. Students finishing requirements in the May Term or Summer I will have their degree posted in August. We have on occasion written letters when needed confirming that the student has met all requirements but their degree will not be posted until the next graduation period. This seems to help.

Good morning! Sam Houston follows the same protocol as the majority of the institutions who responded. We award degrees at the end of term fall/spring/summer. We do provided a letter of completion upon request to degree candidates not pending any current courses to be completed.

Have a great day!
