For Lee College, answers below. Note we do not (yet) require our learning strategies classes of all students...only FTIC degree-seeking students who have a deficiency of at least one TSI component. All FTICs may be required to complete such a class in the future but there are some staffing-facility-scheduling challenges.

Subject: [TACRAO] Listserv Institution policy on Freshman Seminar required courses

Good afternoon,

I would like to know your institution's policy regarding courses such as freshman seminar, university foundations, or other course that you may require a first year student new to your university to enroll in their first semester at your institution.

What action is taken if the student drops the class either before classes start for the semester or during the semester? They can't self-drop. They register the first time at orientation and if they need to change their section before classes start, they see their advisor. After classes start, if we process a drop from one of these classes the drop is reported to the dev ed counselor, who puts a hold on future registration.
Do you have something in place that prevents the student from dropping this type of class? PeopleSoft enrollment control (requires consent before drop)
If the student does drop the class, how do you ensure the student enrolls in the class in a future semester? Must see the dev ed counselor before future enrollment. She makes sure student is registered for the class for the next term, and again, students can't drop w/o assistance.
If the student is dropped from the class, either by administrative drop or by student request, do you require the student to be dropped from all of their classes for the semester? No.
Other policies you may have in place as it applies to these type of courses that may not be addressed above. After two unsuccessful tries (final grade of less than C) in "regular" sections over two terms, students are put into a special section with others repeating for 3rd time. After that we stop requiring the class (and most pass that class but those who don't have a low rate of return, often due to other impacts of poor performance, like failing to meet SAP for aid).
