Borrowing for Developmental Education; Insights on Student Outcomes Using National Data
Kasey Klepfer, TG Research Specialist for Public Policy

What are the financial consequences of taking courses that do not count towards a degree? How are students paying for developmental education? Are we creating additional debt burden among those students who are least academically prepared for postsecondary education? Looking at recently released data from the National Center for Education Statistics, the authors provide a first look at student borrowing by students enrolled remedial education, as well as the latest completion and enrollment trends in developmental education. The authors pay particular attention to the role that community colleges and other universities with open admission policies play in serving these students, and the implications these data have for national student loan policy.

Innovations in Financial Aid: Update on Disbursing Aid Like A Paycheck
Robert Merino, Director of Financial Aid Services, San Jacinto College; JoEllen Soucier, Executive Director of Financial Aid, Houston Community College System; Evan Weissman, Project Director, Aid Like A Paycheck, MDRC
Two institutions in Texas have joined Aid Like A Paycheck, and are testing the benefits of disbursing financial aid refunds to students evenly throughout the term - like a paycheck. San Jacinto College piloted the program in spring 2014, and both San Jacinto College and Houston Community College are gearing up to include half of their new students in the program this fall. Financial aid Directors from the two institutions - along with MDRC's Project Director - will share their experiences, answer your questions, and lead a conversation about the potential benefits and/or drawbacks of disbursing aid in this way.

Integrating Services for Student Financial Success: Key Steps on the Journey
Colin Austin, Senior Program Director, MDC
Financial instability is one of the most often cited reasons students interrupt their postsecondary education. While community colleges typically offer assistance with financial aid issues, a growing number are implementing strategies that bundle training and career services with new supports such as financial education and coaching, access to public benefits, and lower-cost financial products. This workshop will share information and tools from a recent implementation guide that was produced by MDC and based on the experiences of a network of colleges that have tested and adapted these strategies
