Session 1: Psychotropic Medications; A Collaborative Approach
Presenter: Jason K. Smith, APRN, MSN, PMHNP-BC
Justification for Continuing Education Presentation:
Social workers often work with clients that experience mental health issues. In providing services to these individuals, social workers may often question when it is appropriate to refer a client for psychiatric medication assessment and what information is needed in such a referral. Furthermore, when working with clients that are currently prescribed psychotropic medications, social workers may find it advantageous to have a competent knowledge base of commonly used medications as well as adverse reactions or side effects that need to be reported to the collaborating psychiatric professional. This workshop will increase the professional social worker's knowledge and skills by exploring these issues and meeting the following objectives:
Presentation Objectives: Upon completion of this 3 hour seminar/workshop, the SW will be able to:
1) Demonstrate knowledge of common psychotropic medications, indications for use, and basic prescribing considerations
2) Recognize warning signs indicative of adverse drug reactions and side effects which should be reported to the prescriber
3) Discuss referral and collaborative considerations in medication management, including when to refer and what to report
