The meeting started with a brown bag lunch and was followed by individual
introductions.
The group discussed several items including the upcoming NASW State
Conference, changing our meeting time, frequency of meetings, and future
locations for meetings, Social Work Professional Day, membership recruitment
ideas, and ways to improve our local NASW Cluster were covered. Among other
items discussed were possible research projects, ways to help people in our
communities, and student participation at the NASW Conference. We hope to
have a list of all the NASW members to distribute at a future meeting. We
also discussed Brian Brumley's becoming the Leadership Search Chair (LSC)
for the Northeast Texas Chapter of NASW, and it was brought up that we need
to recognize Joyce Foreman, who has been a part of our chapter for a number
of years.
The group also discussed a very important and exciting reward for one of our
own social workers. Ms. Betty Weir from Sulphur Springs, in Hopkins County,
was nominated and was selected for a Social Work Lifetime Achievement award
for Texas. She is scheduled to receive this prestigious honor at the NASW
Conference in October. She is now eligible to be in competition for a
National Social Worker award. This is quite an accomplishment for someone
from a rural area. We are very proud of her for this achievement. However,
on a more somber note, Betty has not been well and is recovering from
serious heart complications. She has requested to be kept in our thoughts
and prayers.
There were several suggestions on ways we could honor Betty on a local level
as well. The suggestions included putting together a care basket, preparing
and releasing a story covering her accomplishments in the local newspapers
and to the AP for wider distribution, gathering personal notes and such to
make a scrapbook for her, and in case she is not able to attend the NASW
Conference, perhaps we could get Betty to do a video tape to be shown at the
Conference. Any assistance with any of these, or other suggestions are
welcome.
