Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Sexual Assault Awareness Week: April 16 - 20

Theme: "It's Time... To Talk About It! Connect. Respect. Prevent Sexual
Violence."

Each Day of Sexual Assault Awareness Week will have a different theme
associated with it that ties in to the overall theme.

Proposed schedule and description of events:

April 3: "Day of Action." This is the day that we spread the message
(theme) that "It's Time...To Talk About It." We can do this by spreading
the word through websites, social media, etc. This is the day we will
launch the marketing campaign. All posters and advertising material will
go up around campus, and art exhibit will be put on display in student
center. Also, spreading the word via social media is important on this
day. Everyone can help by posting something about SAAM or the upcoming
activities or the theme on their facebook status or through twitter. We
will also be spreading the word and hosting different conversations on
the Project Respect facebook page
http://www.facebook.com/#!/RESPECT.TAMUC.

April 25: "Denim Day" We will also honor "Denim Day" day this year which
is a national protest responding to the Italian Supreme Court's
overruling in 1999. An Italian woman was raped, and when the case went
to trial her assailant was found guilty. The Supreme Court then
overturned the ruling saying that jeans are too difficult to remove and
the assailant could not have done so without the victim's help. We will
encourage the student body to wear denim in order to promote discussion
of the misconceptions that surround sexual assault.

Events for Awareness week April 16 - 20:

Monday: The theme for this day is "Connect." We will do this by hosting
various activities throughout the day to spread the word about sexual
assault and creating awareness. During lunch we will have a large banner
with our theme on it outside near the student center. As students walk
by we will offer to paint their hands with teal paint and let them put
their hand prints on the banner as a way of "lending a hand" to the
cause. Also, others will ask people why they paint on their hands and it
will be a good way to spread the word about the theme for the week.
During this time, we will have a table set up nearby with promo items on
it (Project Respect items as well as any brochures or palm cards made
for SAAM). We will also have some of the teal ribbons to disburse so
students can wear them throughout the week. This evening we will have a
guest speaker of some kind. Who it will be and where it will be is still
tentative.

Tuesday: The theme for this day is "Consent Is Sexy." Asking for consent
before acting. This day we will host a scavenger hunt related to the
theme. Students can sign up in teams and the top 2 teams will receive
prizes. Later this night we will host a movie night related to our theme
of the day. We will more than likely provide popcorn and a soda, but we
are still working that out.

Wednesday: The theme for this day is "Pledge." This day is centered on
the men and how they can prevent sexual assault. We will distribute
white ribbons to all men on this day who sign the pledge to "never
commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women." On this
day we will be hosting an all-day basketball tournament called "Game
Over...Putting a Stop to Sexual Violence." Both men and women are
eligible to play. Teams will sign up ahead of time and we will devise a
bracket on who will play each other based on wins and losses. The
players from Full Court Advantage will also be participating in this
event. Players who participate will be excused from class during the day
for their games if they have permission from professor.

Thursday: The theme for this day is "Respect." This day we will be
hosting a "Greek Lip Sync" (this decision is pending). The theme for
either of these will be based on the theme of Respect.

Friday: The theme for this day is "It's Time...To Make a Difference!
Connect. Respect. Prevent Sexual Violence." Early on in this day we will
host a "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes." We will have one of the men's
organizations on campus to participate in a mile long walk in a pair of
women's shoes to show support for the cause. The student body, faculty,
and community are encouraged to come out to this to watch the walk and
show support. Later in the day, we will host an awareness "Teal Ribbon
Walk or Run" that everyone is encouraged to participate in.
