[Stuorg-adv] Seeking Student Organization Collections

Good morning,

My name is Sawyer Magnus and I am the University Archivist on campus.  The Archives is looking to increase our holding of materials related to the experience of students at Texas A&M University-Commerce. As a result, I am reaching out to the advisors of our student organizations, seeking any materials that you may have that tell the story of the student life on campus.

Student organizations have an immense influence on the character and culture of our university, and the archives see it as very important to keep and preserve items that chronicle the actions, events, beliefs, and other important characteristics of the students we serve.  For anyone who is interested in contributing to telling the story of your organization, we recommend taking the following actions:


1.       Take note of any previous historic items that you may have and are not currently being used by the students. This may include meeting minutes, event flyers, photographs or scrapbooks, videos, audio recordings, web-based and social media, and other documents.  If you have any of these types of items, please contact us to see if we would like to accept them for permanent storage here.  We would organize them and make them available for future research.

2.       Talk with the students about the importance of recording their stories for the future.  Help them document and record their activities this semester by suggesting that they keep meeting minutes, photos, event flyers and advertisements, and chronicle the history of their organization in general.  Doing this will allow us to collect these items in the future and add to the organization's collection.

I am also happy to meet with you personally or the larger organization at a meeting to further talk about what we hope to do and the archives process.

Please contact me with any questions you may have, or if you have items that you think the archives would be interested in keeping and making available for research.  I am looking forward to hearing from you and talking about our project further.
