<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><b>BACKGROUND:<o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'>Dr. Neuenschwander received his
BS degree in Chemistry from R.I.T. in 1985, his Ph.D. in Biochemistry &
Molecular Biology from Stony Brook University in New York in 1990, and spent 10
yrs in the Cardiovascular Biology research program at the Oklahoma Medical
Research Foundation in Oklahoma City as a postdoctoral fellow and junior
faculty member before joining the faculty at UTHSCT in 2001. He is a fellow of
the American Heart Association and has authored more than 35 scientific papers.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal><b>MESSAGE:<o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'>Blood clotting is necessary for
maintaining life. However, many life-threatening conditions can result if
clotting is not regulated effectively (heart attacks, strokes and respiratory
failure, for example). The long-term goal of my research is to rigorously
describe the molecular mechanisms involved in regulating blood coagulation in
these various scenarios. A better understanding of these processes will allow
us to rationally design more-effective drugs and/or treatments. To do this, my
lab and others at UTHSCT are using state-of-the-art technologies to perform
studies that span most of the broad sciences from biology to chemistry to
physics. The combination of these disciplines (biochemistry, biotechnology and
biomedical engineering) has proven to be extremely valuable in performing this
research. The constant flow of new technologies that results from this requires
a constant influx of knowledgeable and trained people to develop, disseminate
and use them. <b><i><span style='color:red'>This presentation will highlight
some of these technologies in an effort to convince the audience that careers
in the sciences are not only practical, but extremely fulfilling when viewed in
the context of playing a vital role in the overall process of scientific
investigation and the end goal of enabling us all to live longer and healthier
lives.</span></i></b><a name="_GoBack"></a><o:p></o:p></p>
