Good morning,
Voting has opened on the Student Government Association restructuring referendum. You can vote today and tomorrow until 5 p.m. tomorrow on your MyLeo.
The referendum was triggered by the Student Government Association legislation to restructure the organization. There are constitutional amendments that are made from this legislation. Any constitutional changes for the Student Government Association must be voted on by the Student Body.
The legislation reads:
Whereas, the Student Government Association of Texas A&M University - Commerce has found that there is inadequate representation for each Academic College on campus.
Whereas, the Student Government Association of Texas A&M University - Commerce wishes to have a closer and more direct relationship with the Academic Deans on campus, and feels that it is imperative to take action to address this problem and provide a long-term solution.
Whereas, the Student Government Association of Texas A&M University - Commerce feels that there is a critical need for a restructuring of the Academic Affairs Committee to represent and properly address student concerns from each academic college.
Therefore, Be it Resolved, that the Student Government Association of Texas A&M University - Commerce will initiate a referendum to go before the student body for the purpose of altering the structure of the Academic Affairs Committee and Senate in the following ways:
* Academic representative positions shall be created as a part of the Academic Affairs Committee.
* Deans from each college shall take part in the appointment process for the Academic Representative positions.
* There shall be no more than one (1) academic representative per academic college.
* The academic affairs committee shall be changed to the Academic Affairs Council which shall compose of one at-large member of the Senate as chair, and Academic Representatives as members.
* Academic representative members shall be entitled to full senatorial rights and responsibilities and may be held accountable for impeachment and other sanctioning processes.
* The Senate will be changed to include academic representative members among the 30 Senate positions, therefore, decreasing the number of at-large members by the amount of academic colleges.
* Academic representative members shall not be permitted to hold chair or officer positions in the Senate unless agreed upon by the Executive Board.
* Academic representative members shall be re-selected by the college Dean if they wish to hold the position for an additional term and shall not go through the normal election process. Representative members are; however, allowed to run for election as at-large candidates for Senate or Executive Officers.
* Academic representative members shall share the same term of office as at-large Senators stated in the constitution.
