We would like to pass on some simple reminders for the use of the crosswalk. It is important to follow these basic operation guidelines for your safety and the safety of those driving.
PEDESTRIANS
1. PUSH THE BUTTON. The units will begin operation only after the pedestrian activates the unit by pushing the button. If you do not push the button, you are effectively avoiding a traffic control device.
2. ONLY CROSS when the signal in front indicates so. DO NOT cross if the signal has the hand illuminating, indicating it is not safe to cross.
3. Do not ride bikes or anything else across the road. WALK ONLY.
4. ALWAYS proceed with caution. Look both ways and verify the traffic has stopped
AUTOMOBILES
1. The yellow flashing lights mean slow down and prepare to stop.
2. The solid red lights mean to stop and remain stopped... even if the crosswalk is clear.
3. The blinking red lights mean to first stop, look both ways, then only proceed if the crosswalk is clear.
Remember, avoiding a traffic control device is an enforceable offense.
