Walk a Mile in Her Shoes and Denim Day
Time: 4:00pm – 6:00pm
Location: Amphitheatre
Cost: Free
Organization: SAFE Committee (www.tamuc.edu/itsonus<http://www.tamuc.edu/itsonus>)
On Wednesday, April 26 the SAFE Committee will be sponsoring Walk a Mile in Her Shoes & Denim Day to conclude April’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month. All faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to attend these nationally recognized events!
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is a playful opportunity for men to raise awareness in their community about the serious causes, effects, and remediation’s to men’s sexualized violence against women. This event is a day to draw attention to the fact that one in two women and one in five men experience some form of sexual violence in their lifetimes. The Denim Day campaign was originally triggered by a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. This rape prevention education campaign asks community members to make a social statement with their fashion by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual assault.
Our day will begin with A&M-Commerce’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes at 4PM starting at the Amphitheater. All attendees are invited to walk a short path around campus, as able, with any men choosing to walk in high heels leading the group. The path will conclude back at the Amphitheater where the Denim Day celebration will begin. Light refreshments will be provided at Denim Day, where the SAFE Committee will share the successes from the past year. Please share the attached flyer and make plans to participate on Wednesday, April 26. The flyer for the event is attached here: Walk a Mile & Denim Day Flyer.pdf<http://www.jotformpro.com/uploads/SM22/50075230924953/3684184354953396839/Walk%20a%20Mile%20%26%20Denim%20Day%20Flyer.pdf>
