Lately, there has been numerous accounts in National and Local Media referring to the Zika Virus. Recently Dallas County officials said there are two cases of Zika virus in Dallas County -- one of them transmitted sexually. There has been NO report of local cases. Typically the Zika virus is transmitted by mosquitos, but doctors are now learning that it can also be spread from person to person through sexual activity. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting from several days to a week. Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon. There is no specific treatment or vaccine at this time.

The CDC has released some guidelines for prevention, they have also released some prevention methods for travelers. Please refer to the attached documents. You can access these and additional important information at the CDC's ZIKA website: http://www.cdc.gov/zika/index.html

Texas A&M University - Commerce will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates regularly during this situation.
