HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH CELEBRATIONS
SEPT. 18: HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH KICK OFF AND HISPANIC OUTREACH OPEN HOUSE
Thank you for your support at the Kick Off!
Everyone enjoyed this event with free food, live music, and ballet folklorico. Students also took the opportunity to network and learn about student organizations and campus resources. And of course, everyone received a spirit button designed out of blue and gold tissue paper flowers.
HISPANIC HERITAGE BAILE
The celebration continued for the evening with a Baile (Latino dance) The festivities included free enchilada plates, a live Mariachi Band, live music by DJ Fade, and Piñatas. There was also a traditional "Grito Contest" also known as the Mexican Yell Contest.
We hope to see you at remaining

SEPT. 25: TRAFFICKING BANNED BOOKS
2 pm to 3 pm, RSC Conference Room B
In 2012, Tucson Public Schools abolished the highly successful Mexican American Studies program and publicly confiscated all of the related books. To protest this action, a group of writers banded together to form Librotraficante. <http://www.librotraficante.com/> The group started a nationwide campaign to smuggle the banned books back into Tucson. Liana Lopez <http://lianalisa.com/> , a founding member, will discuss Librotraficante's efforts to preserve and promote Mexican American Studies and the social challenges faced by minorities.
