Painting with Fire! A Clay Club workshop open to all students.
What: The Clay Club invites students, faculty, and staff to participate
in a raku workshop.
When: Saturday, October 26th from 10am - Noon
Where: Wathena Temple Fine Arts Building, Ceramics Studio
Cost: $15 covers instruction and all materials, payable at the door by
cash or check.
Workshop participants will be able to glaze a small platter that has
been prepared by members of The Clay Club. After the glaze has been
applied the pieces will be fired using the raku method. You will have a
completed piece to take home at the end of the workshop.
Raku was developed in Japan in the 16th century and was closely
associated with the Japanese tea ceremony. Raku is a quick firing
process characterized by the removal of the work from the kiln when it
is glowing orange (around 1830 degrees Fahrenheit) and then placing it
in a garbage can filled with combustible material such as newspaper or
sawdust. The piece is allowed to cool in a smoky atmosphere, thus
turning the clay body black and influencing the production of shimmery
metallic glaze surfaces and crackle patterns. Very dramatic!
Limited to 25 participants. Reservations recommended. Wear work clothes!
