In Fall 2013, the Department of Literature and Languages will be
offering an innovative course that blends a popular culture topic
(zombies and werewolves in popular culture) with extensive use of social
media (blogs, Facebook, chat) and an emphasis on internet research
skills.
The class is English 200.01E, taught MWF at 1:00-1:50, in Hall of
Languages, 203 by Dr. Robin Anne Reid. The class is web-enhanced and
will alternate meeting two days face/face as a lecture and discussion
class with two days in small guided discussion sections and group
meetings.
Dr. Reid will present a model of how to work with a cultural studies
approach-discussing how popular texts reflect the beliefs and attitudes
of their time-and then students will apply that approach to a range of
texts of their own choosing, in any medium, as long as there are
(either) zombies or werewolves present.
Students will explore fan as well as professional commentary on their
chosen text(s), and will share insights online in a class blog where
visiting experts will also be contributing their ideas.
English 200 meets the requirement for a humanities course in the general
education sequence, or can be used as one of the lower-level courses in
the Interdisciplinary Studies minor, or as an elective.
Any questions about the class can be directed to Robin.Reid at tamuc.edu
