In 2001, Proof garnered the Drama Desk Award for Best New Play, the
Lucile Lortle Award for Outstanding Play, the New York Drama Critics'
Circle Award for Best Play, The Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony
Award for Best Play.
The story revolves around a mysterious, ground-breaking mathematical
calculation that will revolutionize the science of Mathematics. Set in a
run-down house at the edge of the University of Chicago campus, where
Catherine and her, father, Robert, have lived for years. In his youth,
Robert amazed the world of Mathematics with his brilliant, "elegant and
musical" calculations. His later years are lost to a delusional mental
disorder. Catherine foregoes her own dreams to care for her father at
home. Catherine has inherited some of Robert's talent, but worries that
she may follow in his footsteps in other ways, as well. She has led a
lonely, unrewarding existence, when, a week before her twenty fifth
birthday, Robert dies. Catherine's sister, Claire, who left the family
to pursue a career in currency analysis in New York, flies in to take
charge of the situation.
Hal, Robert's former student asks Catherine for permission to
investigate Robert's papers for anything of mathematical value. An odd,
awkward attraction forms between them, which is strained by the central
question of the story: who wrote the miraculous, game-changing proof,
found locked in Robert's desk?
David Auburn weaves intelligent, if dark humor into the plot of Proof,
which is part ghost story, part love story, and is filled with intense
drama throughout. It celebrates creativity and innovation, and explores
the territory where the line between art and science blurs.
Cast : Cynthia Renee Elizabeth Beene, form Grand Prairie, Texas as
Catherine; Piper Miq'el Bardwell, of Princeton, Texas, as Claire; Sri
Chilukuri, from Dallas, Texas, as Harold Dobbs. The role of Robert is
played by John Hanners, Professor Emeritus, and retired Head of Mass
Media Communication and Theatre. Professor of Mathematics, Stuart
Anderson, Ph.D. served as consultant to the production
There will be a complementary reception following the performance on
opening night.
The play contains adult situations and language.
