Hispanic Film Showcase Fall 2012

The Spanish Program and the Office of Hispanic Outreach at Texas A&M University-Commerce present Gender Issues in Latin American Cinema at our Hispanic Film Showcase, third movie of the series.

This fall 2012, the theme for our Film Showcase is Gender Issues in Latin American Cinema. This showcase is dealing with representations of "masculinity" and "femininity" as social constructions in Latin America, and how individuals cope with what culture demands of their gender choices.

Our third movie of the series is the iconic comedy-drama Strawberry and Chocolate (1991) a Cuban <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cubans> -Spanish <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spain> -Mexican <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexico> co-produced film <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film> , directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom%C3%A1s_Guti%C3%A9rrez_Alea> and Juan Carlos Tabío <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Carlos_Tab%C3%ADo> , based on Senel Paz short story "The Wolf, The Forest and the New Man" (in Spanish, El Lobo, el bosque y el hombre nuevo). The story takes place in 1979, Havana, Cuba. David (Vladimir Cruz) is a university student and militant of the Communist party who meets Diego (Jorge Perugorría), an artist unhappy with the regime's attitude toward the censored conceptualization of culture. In spite of their different view of the world, both men realize that their friendship can span many boundaries -- age, politics, and gender preference between them--. [Spanish with English subtitles]. This movie is open to the public. [Rated R]

Date: Friday November 16 at 6pm. All movies will be played at the Theater 203 in the Hall of Languages. Questions? please contact Dr. María Fernández-Lamarque maria.lamarque at tamuc.edu <mailto:maria.lamarque at tamuc.edu>
