"'How Does it Feel to be a Problem?' Black Vampires in American Media"

Sarah N. Gatson Texas A&M University.

Sarah N. Gatson is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Texas A&M
University. Her research interests include race/ethnicity, gender,

culture, legal studies, identity, community, citizenship, media and
technology, and qualitative methods.

Her work has appeared in Law & Social Inquiry, Research in Community
Sociology, Qualitative Research, Qualitative Inquiry, Contemporary
Sociology,

Feminist Media Studies, and Advances in Physiology Education; as book
chapters in Fighting the Forces: What's at Stake in Buffy the Vampire
Slayer,

Drugs in a Virtual World: Drug Discourse and Community Online.

She is the coauthor of the book Interpersonal Culture on the
Internet-Television, the Internet, and the Making of a Community (Edwin
Mellen Press, 2004).

In her talk, she connects to the insights made by W. E. B. DuBois in The
Souls of Black Folk, examining whether Black vampires are more often
monsters

(in the Nosferatu tradition, with its heavy anti-semitism) or lovers (in
the film Dracula tradition).

Dr. Gatson is appearing as one of the activities scheduled for an
advanced creative writing course taught for the first time at
A&M-Commerce this Spring:

"Forms and Genres" Vampire Narratives." Undergraduate and graduate
students are studying the conventions of vampire narratives in books,
films, and television shows,

and writing their own narratives. Further media presentations and
discussions will take place after Spring Break!
