Dear Appeals Committee:
I do believe in the adage Knowledge is Power. I
understand that my overall grades do not demonstrate my
faith and in this letter I do intend to make excuses but I
would like to explain why I have struggled and how I plan to
improve if given the opportunity.
I would first like to note that mathematics has never been
labeled as one of my strengths. For as long as I can
remember I have had a difficult time mastering the course
and no time stands out to me like the struggle I had to pass
the Mathematics TAKS exam. The exam was difficult for me
and it took me five tries but the tenacious part of my
personality would not live me give in, I did not give up. I
know that I have failed Math 131 but I refuse to give up. I
need to be able to master my nemesis of math and to
demonstrate to myself and to you that I can pass the course
just like the TAKS Math exam . I recognized that I was
having a difficult time in the class and I made efforts to
continuously meet with my professor . I actively sought
after extra credit work but I realize that my success
in the class was cut short by my grade on the Final exam.
In order to master the course I have already been seeking
the help of the same math tutor that assisted me with my
study efforts on the Math TAKS. I have taken advantage of
the winter break by meeting with her three times aa week to
understand the concepts that confused me while taking the
course on campus.
In addition, I feel that I must address my overall academic
performance. It is difficult for me to share but I know
that in order for you to fully understand my performance
that I must share with you some of the obstacles I have
faced this school year. As you might have noted in my
academic files I am the eldest of three children to a single
parent mother. It was during the spring of my freshman year
that she encountered a very difficult time when due to the
economic decline she lost her job. It was during this time
that I had to begin driving back and forth to Dallas to
assist her with caring for my two younger sisters. I
struggled to balance academics and family responsibilities.
Although she regained employment in August it was not until
October that things finally settled down for me and I was
able to focus only on school. It has been since October
that I have been attempting to make up the ground that I
lost while having to assist my family during that difficult
time. In essence, I ran out of time and I really believe
that while impossible if I had just two more weeks to the
semester I would have been fully caught up.
However, I digress, I cannot look to what could have been I
can only make strides into what will be. I have wanted to
attend college every since I knew that college existed and I
have high hopes and goals set for myself. I try to learn
something from every life experience and the thing I have
learned from all of this is that it is okay to ask for help.
I should have sought assistance from other family members
and friends which could have helped me to avoid some of the
struggles we faced as a family and that I faced with school.
I realize that while my mother is right on most occasions
that in this occasion of keeping our family business in
the home that we were both wrong. Since I received
notification that I would have to sit out of school for a
year my mother has cried daily because she feels to blame
and I have explained to her that she is not to blame, but
that the sacrifice I made for our family was well worth it
in order for us to survive.
I beseech of you to give me another opportunity to prove to
you, to myself, and to my family that I can make it as a
student at Texas A&M Commerce. I will do whatever I need to
do in order to be successful. I have already contracted my
math tutor to assist me with math in Commerce. She has
agreed to set up Webinar study sessions with me and I will
attend study groups on campus. I am now 100% focused on my
academics because I want to fulfill my goal of being the
first college graduate in my family.
Regards,
