Dear A&M-Commerce faculty, staff, and students,
The unusually cold and snowy weather we have experienced over the last
several weeks has certainly played havoc with our spring semester. Even
those of you who have been here much longer than the Joneses can't
recall a time when the weather has been so bad for so long. A special
thanks goes out to our Risk Management Office, University Police
Department, and Facilities crew for keeping us informed and safe during
this period of unusual weather.
The policies we have developed to guide us when closing the campus have
certainly received a workout. I will be meeting with the University
Executive Council next week to review all that we have been through and
determine where improvements to our procedures might be made. Please
share your suggestions with the leadership in your department or
division.
My office has received a number of inquiries as to whether the canceled
class days would have to be made up. The short answer is no: unlike
public schools, universities are not required by law to meet for a
minimum number of days per term. Undoubtedly, though, important
assignments, exams, and presentations were missed because of the
closings. I ask faculty to work with your students to determine the
best way to make up for missed work. Please be flexible, recognizing
that many of our students, because of work and family obligations, are
unable to attend make-up classes at non-regularly-scheduled times.
Thanks for your endurance. Personally, I'm ready for summer.
