RECOVERY MONTH CELEBRATION
You are invited to celebrate recovery month with keynote speaker, State Representative Aaron Pena, D-Edinburg. Mark your calendar to attend on Thursday, September 16, 2010, @ 11:00-11:45 am, in the Performing Arts Center, on the campus of Texas A&M-Commerce. (This is a free event) Recovery Month is an annual observance that takes place during the month of September. The Recovery Month observance highlights the societal benefits of substance abuse treatment, lauds the contributions of treatment providers and promotes the message that recovery from substance abuse in all its forms is possible. The observance also encourages citizens to take action to help expand and improve the availability of effective substance abuse treatment for those in need.
Pena's 16-year-old son died May 18, 2001, of a drug overdose at a party. John died after snorting a mix of cocaine and heroin. After his son's death, Peña joined support groups and anti-drug organizations and, through the fog of depression, came to realize that few treatment centers were available to local residents in Texas. "Our political leaders and our population in general do not value these sort of services," Peña said. Aaron Peña Jr., a Texas attorney who ran unopposed for the District 40 state representative's seat, recently walked to the state capitol to highlight the need for better mental health and substance abuse programs across Texas, the San Antonio Express-News reported.
Representative Pena's presence on campus is being sponsored by student organizations from The Department of Counseling Chi Sigma Iota, Department of Social Work (A-TEAM) Advocates at Texas A&M, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and The Psychology Department Psi Chi Organization.
