The Caribbean Students Association will be releasing the balloons
symbolic of the Message To Haiti Campaign on Tuesday, March 23rd outside
the SRSC (adjacent to the AG/IT building). We plan to be there from
11am-1pm with the actual presentation ceremony being at 12:30pm. We
hope that you will be able to promote this, attend, participate, and
cover the event. Below is more in-depth information regarding the
purpose of the event:
On January 12, 2010 an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck the
nation of Haiti. The earth shook for 35 seconds, changing the lives of
thousands of Haitians, and impacting the hearts of people around the
world. Today, the people of the Caribbean stand united in providing
assistance to the people of Haiti, knowing that with continued hard
work, Haiti shall and will rise again.
In accordance with this belief, the members of the Caribbean Students
Association, effective Monday, February 15th, will launch the Message to
Haiti Campaign. The campaign will seek to raise funds to assist in the
earthquake relief efforts, and continued coordinated efforts to restore
normalcy to the nation of Haiti. For a donation of $2.00 donors may
write a small message of hope to the people of Haiti. The hand written
message will be placed in a balloon on March 23rd, which will then be
released into the heavens in a ceremony honoring the approximately
200,000 lives lost, and the over 1 million internally displaced people.
Individuals may also purchase seedlings to plant for $2 in recognition
of "Hope For Haiti."
A formal letter will be crafted, which will include samples of the
messages written by donors, this letter will be addressed to Rene Garcia
Perval, the president of Haiti. The letter will be delivered to the
Consulate General, Mr. Ralph Latortue of the Haitian Consulate in Miami
on behalf of the students, faculty and staff at Texas A&M
University-Commerce.
All donations will be sent to the Red Cross for assistance in the relief
efforts. Student organizations and academic departments may choose to
submit donations on behalf of their organizations. Such organizational
donation will, on March 23rd, secure the release of a gold colored
balloon in honor of the people of Haiti and in recognition of the
donation by the organization. The name of the organization and or
academic department will be included in the letter to President Perval.
The minimum donation for organizational/departmental sponsorship is
$50.00.
