There isnt much senior guard Britney Jordan hasnt accomplished in her three-year tenure with the Texas A&M University-Commerce womens basketball team, but she can now add another feat to her list.
Jordan collected enough votes from members of the College Sports Information Directors of America to be named a 2009 Daktronics Division II Womens Basketball First-Team All-American for the first time in her career.
Im just happy, blessed and feel honored to be recognized again, said Jordan. It shows just how much the school and coaching staff has supported me.
Shes getting the awards she deserves, along with being a student-athlete and graduating, said Lions head basketball coach Denny Downing.
With the selection, Jordan becomes the first womens basketball player in program history to earn first-team All-American honors. Former teammate Kanani Marshal and Jordan each collected All-American honors in each of the past three seasons, but never higher than a third-team pick.
Jordan, who came to A&M-Commerce in 2006-07 after playing one season at Temple, carried the Lions to 65 victories and a .691 winning percentage over the past three seasons. The Lions had just a 38.6 winning percentage prior to her arrival.
I wanted to win, said Jordan. I didnt think of scoring, rebounds or awards, I wanted to win.
While winning came easy, so did the awards.
Jordan has collected three straight Lone Star Conference North Division First-Team honors, consecutive Daktronics All-South Central Region First-Team and WBCA Honorable Mention All-American recognition (2007-09) and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the LSC Tournament (2007) and a member of the NCAA South Central Regional all-tournament team (2007).
Along with the regional and WBCA All-American honors, Jordan was named WBCA Division II Player of the Month for January and followed with honorable mention player of the month recognition in February of this year. She was also selected as the LSC Player of the Week on five occasions and was named LSC North Division Player of the Year prior to the LSC Tournament.
I was fortunate enough to win those awards, but that was never my goal, said Jordan.
She earned the recognition with her nation-leading 31.3 points per game this season. She added 6.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 2.5 steals per outing to pace A&M-Commerce to an 18-11 record and spot in the LSC Tourney for the fifth consecutive year.
I think we realized that after Britney had been here for two years
that we needed to open the floor for her, said Downing. There werent two people in our league that could guard her. They had two people running at her all the time.
Overall, she tallied 909 points this year, which is an A&M-Commerce and LSC record, and finished her career with 2,105, another Lions mark. Jordan is currently the owner of 21 program and four conference records.
She was joined on the Daktronics All-America First-Team by Hillsdale's Katie Cezat, West Texas A&M's Emily Brister, California's (Pa.) Brooque Williams and BYU-Hawaii's Latoya Wily.
While Jordan has enough honors to fill a trophy case, she says she couldnt have accomplished it without the help of others.
My teammates definitely played a key role in it. I give them a lot of credit for supporting me.
