The Commerce ISD Communities in Schools program needs volunteers to help
with mentoring and tutoring students; as well as, providing training
programs, organizing after school programs, or being a guest speaker to
a class. You can volunteer for a one-time event/project or you can
volunteer on an on-going basis for an entire semester and/or school
year. It's your choice.
The Communities in Schools program is a way to bring the community into
the classroom to help kids succeed for life. The program addresses
children's unmet needs by allowing an adult to come into the school to
work with the child. It bridges the gap between the community and the
school, and creates a successful environment for the child. The program
is geared to help students with academics, attendance and behavior
problems; as well as, provide mentoring for any child needing somebody
to talk to and share some time with them.
As a mentor, you will go to the school once a week and meet with a
child. You can help that child with school work, you can read together,
play board games, or you can have lunch together and visit. The main
thing is to spend time with the child.
The tutoring program is everyday after school from 4-5 p.m. You can
volunteer for the days you can be there and the subjects you would like
to help tutor. Also, you can volunteer to help a teacher in a
classroom. You can help one time, or you can go on a continuing basis.
Or maybe you would like to help start a school club program; such as, a
science club or a geography club. Also, there is a need for some after
school programs.
There is a training session scheduled for Tuesday, January 27th at 6:30
p.m. at the Commerce Middle School for anybody interested in
volunteering. You will need to bring your driver's license and your
social security card for a background check if you decide to sign-up as
a volunteer.
The Communities in Schools program is also in need of new and gently
used CISD standardized dress clothing donations and school supplies.
If you are interested in helping with the program, but cannot attend the
training session, then please contact Lois Stevens at the Commerce
Middle School at 903-886-3795 or at Lois.Stevens at commerceisd.org. Also
contact Ms. Stevens if you would like to make a donation of clothing or
school supplies.
