After scoring a career-high 53 points, setting the Texas A&M University-Commerce womens basketball career scoring mark and breaking her own A&M-Commerce Field House scoring record in January, senior guard Britney Jordan was named the Womens Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Player of the Month.
I feel honored just to be recognized, let alone to get player of the month, said Jordan. Its good to get recognition for our university. It feels good.
The Peoria, Ill., native fired out of the gates with a then LSC record 53-point performance in her first game of the month against Abilene Christian. Jordan then eclipsed Katedria Mosleys career mark of 1,601 points to jump atop the A&M-Commerce record books on January 14 before pouring in 47 three days later to break her own A&M-Commerce Field House scoring record.
It feels great to know I was able to do all those things, but really I was just going out trying to provide a spark and trying to be a good leader and a good teammate, said Jordan.
The All-American candidate averaged 32.5 points, 7.1 rebounds and 5.7 assists throughout the month and led the Lions to four wins in their last five games to close the month.
It also helps that Ive had a very supportive team and coaching staff to believe in me. It feels good, its not just me, its a team effort. Without them I wouldnt have been able to do all that, added Jordan.
The WBCA has been handing out monthly honors to Division I female student-athletes since the 2003-04 season, but started giving the award to Division II athletes this season. Jordan is just the third player to be selected Division II Player of the Month after Katie Cezat (Hillsdale College) and Ana Wurtz (Winona State University) shared the honor in December.
In addition to her other honors, Jordan was also featured in Sports Illustrateds Faces in the Crowd section in the Jan. 12 issue, which features amateur athletes from around the nation that have recently excelled in their sport.
These are the kind of honors you like seeing her get because of her work ethic, said Lions head coach Denny Downing.
Jordans work ethic has also made for a successful season, as she leads all Division I, II and III men and womens scorers with 30.6 points per game (as of Feb. 1). She has been named LSC North Division Player of the Week three times this season and has the Lions in position to advance to the conference tournament.
Its amazing, said Downing.
