Summer 2009 Teaching Opportunity in Taiwan
The Department of Literature and Languages in conjunction with National
Chiayi University is offering two ESL teaching positions in Taiwan
during the month of July, 2009. Prior ESL teaching experience is
preferred, but not mandatory. Below is a detailed description of the
program. Selected teachers will receive $2,000 total towards all
expenses. Any expenses beyond $2,000 will be the responsibility of the
teacher. A candidate should be financially able to purchase his/her own
ticket to Taiwan and then be reimbursed for the purchase.
On Friday, April 24, Rebecca Boggs, who taught in the program last
summer along with Lacey Boggs, will give a PowerPoint presentation on
their teaching experience. The presentation will be at 1:00 in Room 208
of the Hall of Languages. All are invited, especially those interested
in teaching in the program this Summer.
Description of the Program in Taiwan
Two positions: One teacher will work in the Eastern Area of Chiayi City,
which includes 4 junior high schools (one school for one week-in the
order of Chiayi Junior High, Nanxing Junior High, Lantan Junior High and
Daye Junior High). The other teacher will work for the Western Area of
Chiayi City, also including 4 junior high schools (also one school each
week-including Beixing Junior High, Yushan Junior High, Minsheng Junior
High and Beiyuan Junior High).
The time period is from July 4-August 3, 2009. Teachers should arrive in
Taipei on July 4, 2009.
For the eastern area: in the morning the TAMU-C English voluntary
teacher goes to each class for one hour. The students are the 7th- 8th,
and 9th graders. The Taiwanese English Service Club member will help
keep order and to go to the right class. In the afternoon, it is a
summer camp to the 7th-, 8th- and 9th- graders, who are willing to come
and get parents' agreement to join in it. Usually the summer camp
attendees are interested in English. They will probably go to the USA or
the UK sometime in their life (e.g., from kindergarten to grade 3).
For the Western area: the first week is different (summer camp for the
whole week). The 2nd week throughout the 4th week is the same practice
as the eastern area.
The four weeks, July 4-10, 11-17, 18-25, 26-30, the teachers will stay
free with one family each week, details to follow. Lunch on weekdays at
schools is indeed free of charge.
They will teach Monday-Friday (8:00-12:00; 13:00-17:00). The teaching
materials: Talking about attractive places in Chiayi City and County
(training students to become English guides). I will send you some
articles about cultural and scenic places (perhaps with pictures).
Chiayi City is quite small (60 square kilometer;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiayi). It's the 15th largest city in
Taiwan.
Teachers will also visit senior schools in Taiwan to talk about graduate
study at Texas A&M University-Commerce.
If you are interested in being considered for one of these positions,
please contact Robert J. Baumgardner, Department of Literature and
