Science Building Art Competition
Prospectus
The College of Arts and Sciences is pleased to solicit proposals toward a
commission for artwork to be installed in the new Science Building. The
winning work will be hung on one wall of the first floor conference room
(103), and should be appropriate to the site and to the uses of the room.
Since the conference room will be frequently used by University faculty and
students, works of an unusually fragile nature or works that might interfere
with the semipublic use of the room will not be considered. Proposals for
two-dimensional works such as drawings, paintings, photographs, and prints,
as well as for shallow relief sculptures will be considered for the
commission. There are no restrictions on subject matter or medium.
However, entries reflecting something about the sciences, either as they
intersect with the arts or as a worthy subject of artistic expression in
themselves, stand a good chance of serious consideration for the commission.
Stipend: The winning entrant will receive a stipend of $500 when the work
has been installed at the completion of the commission. There is no fee for
entering.
Eligibility: The competition is open to all students currently enrolled at
TAMU-Commerce.
Juror: John Pomara, Associate Professor of Art at UT-Dallas and
distinguished ETSU alumnus.
Application: Interested persons should submit proposals to the Department of
Art, Room 104 Art Building. The proposal packet should include the
following:
1. Evidence of creative abilities in the form of 5-10 images of work
completed within the past two years in the form of either 35 millimeter
slides or digital images on CD.
2. A drawing or maquette (not to exceed 10 inches in any dimension) of
the proposed piece, giving a clear indication of what it will look like when
completed.
3. A brief (200 words or less) typed description of the project being
proposed, indicating materials, dimensions, and the artist's conception of
the project's significance to art, science, and the University community.
4. Artist's contact information, including phone number and email
address.
Calendar:
1. Deadline for entries: April 7, 2006
2. Juror's decision will be announced before the end of the spring
term.
3. Final installation of commissioned work: no later than August 25,
2006.
Additional information will be available in the Department of Art main
office, Art 104.
