Thor Guard Lightning Prediction System
Texas A&M-Commerce is being protected by the Thor Guard lightning prediction
system. This is the same system used exclusively by the PGA Tour, Senior
Tour, LPGA and USGA. It was also used at all 1996 Olympic venues in
Atlanta. The main sensor is located at Henderson Hall and horn locations
are at Gee Library, Morris Recreation Center, Henderson Hall, Halladay
Student Services, Hubbell Hall, Memorial Stadium, and the Band Marching
field behind Whitley. The Thor Guard control panel is located at the
University Police Department in Henderson Hall.
Operating as a fully automatic system, the horns sound two distinctly
different tone sequences. When the probability of lightning is imminent, a
single 15 second blast will alert everyone accordingly. Whether you are at
the stadium, intramural fields, pool or your courtyard, please seek shelter
in an automobile, building or other covered area. When the danger passes,
you may return to your activities when three short (5 second) blasts
are heard.
In order to keep the entire system operational, we will test all horn
locations on a monthly basis. On the first Wednesday of every month, at
12:00 Noon, the "All Clear" (three short blast sequence) will be manually
activated, unless there is a potential for dangerous weather approaching.
For questions or further information, please call the Safety/Risk Manager
at X5862. Thank you.
