[Students] Homecoming Events Set Oct. 17-22

FUN HOMECOMING 2005 EVENTS SCHEDULED OCT. 17-22


	COMMERCE, Texas -- Homecoming 2005 will be celebrated Monday, 
Oct. 17, through Saturday, Oct. 22, at Texas A&M University-Commerce.

	Highlighting the week will be numerous activities including 
the Hotdog Spirit Day Cookout on Wednesday; College of Education and 
Human Services Outstanding Alumni Luncheon, and Homecoming Pep Rally 
and Bonfire, all on Friday; and Alumni Homecoming Breakfast, tailgate 
party, football game, and Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet, all on 
Saturday.

	The theme for the week is "Proud Legacy, Bright Future."

	Alumni Relations Director Derryle Peace said, "Texas A&M 
University-Commerce has a long and rich history of providing quality 
educational experiences to its students, and consequently alumni have 
been able to compete and flourish in every arena imaginable. We are 
confident that the current student body will continue this legacy of 
excellence and success."

	Alumni and friends of the university are invited back to 
"re-connect with the university, visit with faculty and staff, see 
the changes that are occurring on campus, and provide the student 
body with further examples of success," Peace said.

	Peace and Dallas junior Jarred Davis, who is serving as 
student chair of the Homecoming Committee, are working with the 
committee to plan the events and coordinate the details.

	"Jarred Davis is providing leadership and enthusiasm worthy 
of praise," the alumni director said. "His cooperative spirit and 
willingness to take on this responsibility will add to the success of 
this year's Homecoming activities.

	Successful alumni will be honored at Homecoming 2005.

	At noon on Friday, Oct. 21, the College of Education and 
Human Services will honor 115 of its graduates. This event will be in 
the American Ballroom of the Sam Rayburn Memorial Student Center. For

	At the Alumni Homecoming Breakfast starting at 8:30 a.m. 
Saturday, two will be honored as Distinguished Alumni and two will 
receive the Gold Blazer Award.

	This year's Distinguished Alumni are Dr. Dan Moore, associate 
professor of music at the University of Iowa, and Dr. Thomas 
Huddleston, vice president of Marketing, Communications, and 
Admissions at the University of Central Florida.

	Moore developed the MIDI marimba, an instrument which 
produces acoustic and electronic sounds simultaneously.

	Huddleston is a leader on his campus of 44,000 students.

	The Distinguished Alumni Award goes to graduates who have 
excelled in their career fields, bringing honor to A&M-Commerce.

	The Gold Blazer Award for service to the Alumni Association 
and the university are Jack G. Pirkey of Cumby and Jerry "Jace" 
Carrington of Dallas.

	Pirkey is retired after a 35-year career as a football coach 
and math teacher.

	Retired after 31 years with Texas Instruments, Carrington is 
chair of the Tejas/Sig Ep Social Reunions.

	The Alumni Homecoming Breakfast in the American Ballroom of 
the student center will cost $10. For more information, contact

	At noon Saturday, Lion supporters are invited to the tailgate 
party on the West Lawn of the student center. The tailgate fun will 
last until shortly before the 2 p.m. football game kickoff.

	The Lions will take on Northeastern State in Memorial 
Stadium. At halftime the Homecoming King and Queen will be announced.

	A&M-Commerce athletics will continue to be in the spotlight 
Saturday evening. The Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet will start at 7 
in the Texas Ballroom of the student center.

	At noon Wednesday, the Hotdog Spirit Day Cookout will take 
place on the East Lawn of the student center. The Commerce Area 
Alumni Chapter will help to serve the food.

	The fall sports teams and coaches will be introduced, and 
most spirited student groups will be awarded cash prizes of $100, $75 
and $50.

	Students, university employees and area alumni are invited to 
the cookout.

	On Friday evening, Lion fans can show their spirit at the 
Homecoming Pep Rally and Bonfire. The pep rally will begin at 8 p.m. 
behind Whitley Hall followed by the bonfire.

	Radio personalities Tara Schneider from 99.5 "The Wolf" and 
Donovan Lewis from 93.3 "The Bone," both A&M-Commerce graduates, will 
serve as this year's emcees.

	Cash prizes of $100, $200 and $300 will be given to the most 
spirited student organizations.  Alumni and university friends are 
also invited to the pep rally and bonfire.

	Something new has been added to the pep rally and bonfire - 
fireworks. Organizers said it is something to add to the fun and will 
not overpower the bonfire.
