Abstract:
For over two decades carbon nanomaterials have been a major focus of nanotechnology. Carbon nanotubes and graphene have acquired a number of potential applications in science and engineering and now are starting to be employed in the field of biotechnology.
Due to their unique physical and chemical properties, carbon nanotubes have a number of applications in biomedical field as agents for photothermal therapy, drug transport vehicles and biological imaging agents. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) provide
a large platform for the transport of multiple drugs and target agents, while protecting human body from adverse effects of the drugs. SWCNTs also simultaneously serve as biological imaging agents via their intrinsic fluorescence in the near-infrared, where
biological tissue is more transparent. I will survey recent experimental work in the field and will describe our studies of carbon nanotube-assisted delivery of small interfering RNA for the purposes of cancer treatment. In our work, SWCNTs have shown advantageous
active agent delivery in cells and in tissues, suggesting a novel route for modern cancer therapeutics [1]. I will also describe the new advances and applications of graphene and graphene derivatives in biophysics and will present our work on optical properties
of graphene oxide. In our studies [2], graphene oxide has shown a great potential of serving as multimodal drug delivery/imaging/sensing agent for simultaneous disease diagnostics and therapeutics.
