Matchev's group works at the interface of theoretical particle physics, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing. The questions are the field's oldest - what is dark matter, what lies beyond the Standard Model, how do you measure particles that do not
interact in the detector - but the methods are new: neural networks that uncover symmetries and Lie group structures hidden in data, symbolic regression that derives formulas human theorists had missed, and quantum machine-learning architectures for collider
data. Because he is one of few theorists inside the CMS Collaboration at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, students here build methods that real experiments go on to adopt - currently through a Department of Energy Genesis Mission project developing autonomous
AI agents for high-energy physics simulation and analysis. Group members have won AI hackathons like the international Ariel Machine Learning Data Challenge at NeurIPS, and have gone on to postdocs at CERN and Fermilab and faculty positions worldwide. More

pairs a unique laboratory for measuring quantum entanglement at the highest energies ever reached. He also studies the rare production of four top quarks to probe the top quark's coupling to the Higgs boson, and searches for new physics beyond the Standard
