[phas-undergrad] Advising and spring class registration

Good news, everyone!

It is almost that time of the semester to register for spring classes!

While you technically could wait until early January to register for classes, registering early ensures that you have a seat in popular classes. It also makes sure we don't cancel an important class due to an apparent lack of interest. If you change your mind, you can add and drop classes *free of charge* until the start of the spring semester, but we can't reschedule a section that was dropped due to apparent lack of student interest.

This is also a good time to visit with me, your departmental advisor, to make sure that your choices are appropriate and keep you on track to graduate in the shortest possible time. Some of our courses are only offered once every two years, some are offered once a year, and some every semester. By making an advising appointment with me before registering for classes, you can ensure that you aren't unknowingly dooming yourself to extra semesters of college.

What should you do? I'd strongly suggest the following:

1. Go to the Schedule of Classes to see which physics and astronomy courses are being offered in the spring: https://appsprod.tamuc.edu/Schedule/Schedule.aspx?Term=202420&Dept=PHAS (it tends to load slowly)

2. Go to DegreeWorks to view what you still need to take in order to graduate. Go to leoportal.tamuc.edu<https://leoportal.tamuc.edu/>, login, click on the Student Resources tab, and select Undergraduate DegreeWorks.

3. Make an appointment with me to discuss your plans and thoughts: https://kurtiswilliams.youcanbook.me is my preferred method to do this.

4. Also make an appointment to see Hannah Stotts, the academic advisor for the College of Science. She will not only double check my suggestions, but also make sure your plans for core courses, double majors, minors, internships, research, etc. are appropriate for your career goals. Hannah can be reached by email at: Hannah.Stotts at tamuc.edu<mailto:Hannah.Stotts at tamuc.edu> or by phone at: 903-886-5776.

Even if you have a different assigned academic advisor, it's still good to do the above things before registering for classes - I understand the physics programs better than most other advisors, while your other advisors and Hannah know far more than me about everything else.

Cheers,
Dr. Williams
