Hello Students,

Please read the message below. This is an excellent opportunity to work for the government and to develop your skills. The work looks very specific (it has to do with particle detectors), but the developed knowledge is basically in data science. I think you will learn by doing the job, make some money, and enjoy using your brain.

If you are interested, please stop by my office and we will contact together the officer at the department of energy.

Carlos

Good afternoon Carlos,

First and foremost, thank you for everything you did for me while I was at TAMU-C, I really appreciate the guidance as I developed as a physicist and a person.

I am in the process of putting together some proposals that I think might be a good fit for a couple of master’s student at TAMU-C. I certainly can’t make any promises, but I think TAMU-C would be a competitive university.

At a high level, one of the project aims to study how different sets of software can be interfaced with each other efficiently. For instance, you may have one piece of software that models QCD and you use the outputs of that software as inputs to another piece of software that models detector responses. Ideally we are trying to understand how this type of work is done in academia (namely particle physics or potentially astrophysics) as well as industry.

The other project aims to look into the development of small, low power, highly authenticatable capacitive sensors for particle detection and ID. Basically, we want to take something like the ATLAS/CMS detector and see if it is feasible to shrink it down and simplify it.

Generally this type of work would come with funding for a master’s student, or possibly two, for each project as well as a few hours a month for a PI to help guide the students. In principle the PI could be you, or really any other faculty member. Due to the nature of the work, it is easiest if the PI and student’s are US citizens, although that is not a strict requirement.

Let me know if this is something you (or anyone else at TAMU-C) would be interested in. We can also see about setting up a video call sometime to answer any questions that may pop up.

Thank you!
