Dear members of the Texas Section of the American Physical Society (TSAPS),

The APS stated on February 26, 2022 that "The American Physical Society (APS) condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine and is gravely concerned about its impact. APS stands in solidarity with the Ukrainian physics community and all people whose safety has been jeopardized, and whose homes, families and careers have been disrupted by the violence." On its webpage APS Response to the Invasion of Ukraine, the APS provides guidance on ways to help including the support of the US National Academies of Sciences (NAS) Safe Passage Fund. As stated on its website:

"The U.S. National Academy of Sciences has established the Safe Passage Fund to help Ukrainian scholars and their families who are being forced to flee Ukraine because of the Russian invasion. The NAS is covering the cost of these efforts with its own funds so that 100% of individual donations can be used to support grants that will allow Ukrainian scholars to continue their important contributions to international science and research. These efforts will take place through the Scientists and Engineers in Exile or Displaced (SEED) program, which was launched in August 2021, after the fall of Kabul and the resulting escape of large numbers of Afghan scientists and engineers. The fund will be used in the future to support other displaced or exiled researchers around the world."

TSAPS supports this effort and, through the generosity of its members, would like to raise $20,000 for the NAS Safe Passage Fund. On May 15, 2022, APS created a program in which it would match donations by its Units to the NAS Safe Passage Fund. Through the auspices of this program, TSAPS has made a donation of $6,344.87 that will be matched for a total donation of $12,689.74. We need your help to get the rest of the way there ($7,310.26). We would like to ask all TSAPS members to make individual donations through the NAS Safe Passage Fund<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww8.nationalacademies.org%2Facademygiving%2Fnasem%2Facademygiving.aspx%3Ffundname%3DSafe%2520Passage%2520Fund&data=05%7C01%7CBarbara.Szczerbinska%40tamucc.edu%7C6e1faa86df9747a1083508da506dc30b%7C34cbfaf167a64781a9ca514eb2550b66%7C0%7C0%7C637910729627845047%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=88tw%2FVRcp3b%2F4x8qsy8vFn8vQ5FAUjdzeg%2FOkIPH9JE%3D&reserved=0> website before Friday, July 15, 2022 until a total donation of $20,000 is reached. Every donation helps no matter how small; a gift of just $5.00 by each of our 1,500 TSAPS members would help us achieve our goal.

To help us track the donations and provide all our members with regular updates on reaching our goal, please:

  * Use "Safe Passage Fund" when listing the Designation
  * In "Honor/Memory of, Matched by" section, indicate that your gift is in honor of the "Texas Section APS".

Thanks for your support for the Ukrainian scientific community in this time of urgent need!

Sincerely,

Prof. Barbara Szczerbinska

Chair, TSAPS Executive Committee
