Dear Colleague:

We would like to ask you to encourage undergraduate students at your institution who are completing their degrees in Physics to consider pursuing our NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) program here at Kansas State University.

Our department will host our program entitled Interactions of Matter, Light and Learning for 10 weeks next summer, pending the COVID-19 status. We invite your students who have completed a course in modern physics to apply. To this end, we ask that you forward the attached poster to your undergraduate physics majors and minors.

Student participants will be involved with a variety of research projects at the leading edge of research. For example, students will study cosmology; ultrafast lasers and attosecond physics; nanoparticle materials; high energy and neutrino physics; biological physics; and physics education research. They will have access to our state-of-the-art facilities, such as the Kansas Light Source ultrafast high intensity laser.

All students will be full participants in active research groups, and will be mentored by faculty who are recognized for their research and their teaching abilities. For example, our atomic physics program is highly rated, and one of our faculty members has been recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as National Professor of the Year.

Students selected to participate will receive a $5,450 stipend, $750 travel allowance, and on-campus room and board, for a value of over $8,500. They will live on campus with students in this and other REU programs and will have access to all the usual facilities at Kansas State: libraries, recreation centers, and so on.

Online applications are available at www.phys.ksu.edu/reu<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.phys.ksu.edu_reu&d=DwMFAg&c=oqyuZuih6ykib6aKiBq22_bich4AVfYGoLertJN0bEc&r=oPHX933s0QxGh0LKaD80CQbTBmY6tYbw-FCePPPwFYM&m=3QLwyZWqW-nUNtbIaUciyFfNZj3XXuAZZmZNKuGwp9M&s=9XdJI3rLGzNksWpFxKqEoqCRT7BZM2_XXYdbBfMvQ7c&e=>. An unofficial transcript and letter of reference are also required. We will begin reviewing applications on February 15 and will continue until all places are filled.

If you or your students have any questions or would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact us at (785)532-1612 or e-mail reu at phys.ksu.edu<mailto:reu at phys.ksu.edu>.

Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,
Bret N. Flanders Loren Greenman
