College of Science and Engineering Speaker Series
Presents a Talk by Dr. Gerald Fudge
Teaching Machine Learning and Computational Math to Undergraduates
📅 Date: May 1, 2025
⏰ Time: 4:00 PM
📍 Location: STC 127
Virtual option : https://tamuc.zoom.us/j/99712107501?pwd=NXbiQZLSVFeuVNsx7L9j8WBV8h1i7m.1
Computational mathematics and machine learning are increasingly essential skillsets for engineers and scientists. However, effectively teaching these topics presents unique challenges—particularly at Institutions like ETAMU, where more than half of engineering students come from first generation households, alongside other underserved groups. This talk explores both the successes and setbacks experienced since implementing substantial curriculum changes in computational math and machine learning within the Electrical Engineering program beginning in Fall 2021. Although the primary focus is on electrical engineering, the insights and strategies shared are broadly applicable to other disciplines where computational proficiency and machine learning expertise are becoming vital.
