Hi all graduate students in Physics and Astronomy,
I am considering offering PHYS-523 in Fall 2024 if there is a sufficient number of students for the course.
PHYS 523 “Advanced Atomic Physics” will be changed to “Advanced Atomic, Molecular, and Materials Physics” to make the course more general for applied physics.
: A study of theoretical and applied aspects of atomic, molecular, and solid structure. Topics include atomic and molecular models of materials, ionization phenomena, X-ray, X-ray diffraction, and atomic collisions. Experimental investigations of atomic phenomena will be stressed. Prerequisites: PHYS 520 or equivalent or consent of instructor.”
Emmanuel and Sahjahan took the course in Fall 2023. You can ask them about the course.
The course will cover:
1. Atomic and molecular energy levels (electronic, vibrational, rotational energy levels and transitions).
2. Quantum mechanical principles of photoluminescence: Fluorescence and Phosphorescence.
3. Principles of Raman spectroscopy and its applications.
4. Principles of FTIR, ATR-FTIR measurements and their applications.
5.
CW and Pulsed lasers.
6.
Principles of photoluminescence lifetime measurements for fluorescence and phosphorescence.
7.
Optical microscopes vs electron microscopes (SEM, TEM), and their applications.
8.
Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS, EDX, EDXS or XEDS) and its applications.
9.
and more.
Some topics will include hands-on lab activities.
Plz email me back if you are interested in the course in Fall 2024.
