famous Dicke model is one of the most iconic models in quantum optics. It
describes an ensemble of two-level atoms uniformly coupled to a single-mode
cavity field via electric dipole coupling. The most salient feature is the
existence of a second-order quantum phase transition between the so-called
normal and superradiant phases. Intense studies over several decades have
revealed a wealth of interesting physics. Here we want to consider two
important extensions of the model. (1) We consider an array of such
cavities connected by photon hopping between them. The hopping amplitude
can be engineered to mimic the effect of a magnetic field on charged
particles. This system has an interesting analogy with quantum magnetism.
(2) Instead of two-level atoms, we consider an ensemble of multi-level
atoms and show that the normal-superradiant phase transition can exhibit
higher-order criticality. These studies demonstrate that new physics can
still be discovered in such an old model. For more information, see the UT
