Hi all students in Physics and Astronomy,
There is an interesting chemistry seminar at 2 PM tomorrow (9/24, Friday) in room 123.
2-3 pm, September 24, Science #123
“Change the world one element at a time”
By Dr. Diana Mason Professor Emeritus of UNT
Abstract: Calling all native Texans and those who got here as fast as you could! A notable bull rider once said, "It ain't braggin' if it's true!" This presentation highlights how the history of Texas has laid the foundation of our status on the world's stage and how things that happened in Texas have made a difference. Highlighted are the advent of the discovery of oil, the addition of a malodorant to natural gas, the fluoridation of municipal water supplies, a few special solutions, and the birth of nanotechnology and the lithium battery. Selected are the 10 stories (maybe more) that are engaging, and you'll get to leave with all the bragging rights that make Texas and Texans extraordinary.
Diana Mason holds a Ph.D. in Science Education with the emphasis in chemistry from The University of Texas at Austin and a MS in Zoology from East Texas State University where she evaluated the embryotoxic effects of polychlorinated biphenyls on zebrafish. She taught chemistry (high school, 2-year college, and university levels) for 33 years. Professor Emeritus Diana Mason retired from her position as the Director of the Chemistry Education Program at the University of North Texas (UNT) in August 2012. Currently, she is a Regional Director of the Associated Chemistry Teachers of Texas, Editorial Board Member for Journal of Science Education and Technology, scholarship chair for the Daughters of the American Revolution, and leads a statewide general chemistry improvement project consisting of five Hispanic-emerging and five HispanicServing universities. Dr. Mason is an active member and Fellow of the American Chemical Society (ACSF) and was the general chair of two major conferences (ChemEd 2007 and BCCE 2010) held at UNT. She has delivered numerous presentations and published over 30 journal articles/book chapters related to improving student learning, and recruitment and retention of general chemistry students. She is also member of the Texas Veterans Hall of Fame Board and is an Admiral in the Texas Navy commissioned by Governor Abbott in 2016.
